The Danger of “Almost”: Why Almost Doesn’t Do It
In Acts 26:28, King Agrippa uttered one of the most tragic phrases in all of Scripture: “Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.” In his powerful sermon, “Almost Doesn’t Do It,” Dr. David Thorne explores the heartbreaking and dangerous reality of spiritual hesitation.
The Apostle Paul stood in chains before King Agrippa and the Roman governor Festus. Given the chance to defend himself, Paul didn’t plead for his own freedom; instead, he fearlessly presented the Gospel. He shared his testimony, the fulfillment of the prophets, and the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Festus mocked Paul, calling him insane, but Paul turned to the king and asked if he believed the prophets. Agrippa’s response? He was almost persuaded.
Dr. Thorne reminds us that Agrippa had every advantage. He knew the Scriptures, he heard the truth, and he felt the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Yet, he walked away. The core message of this sermon is a stark warning: “Almost” saved is completely lost. You cannot be almost born, and you cannot be almost alive. In God’s economy, there is no such thing as partial salvation. You are either in the Kingdom of Light or the domain of darkness.
It is not enough to simply know about Jesus or even believe the historical facts of the Bible. You must personally receive Him as your Lord and Savior. The most dangerous position in the world is not that of the ignorant sinner, but the one who knows the truth, feels the pull of the Spirit, and yet refuses to fully surrender.
Furthermore, Dr. Thorne warns against the deception of procrastination. We often tell ourselves we will get saved later, after we clean up our lives, or when we have more time. But as James 4:14 reminds us, our lives are a mere vapor. There is no biblical guarantee of tomorrow. What if today is your last opportunity?
If you have been sitting on the fence, feeling the tug of the Spirit but holding back, hear this warning. Do not be like King Agrippa. Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world or the approval of men cost you your soul. Today is the day of salvation. Step through the door of grace, leave the “almost” behind, and become truly saved.
